What the Local WeatherGuy Doesn’t Have Time to Say

Hola Weather Weenies

So I sit here on a cloudy day, the first one in what seems like forever.  We certainly need the rain, but this isn’t any ordinary rain.  This is rain from a gray-haired storm named Fay.  I just found it mildly amusing that a storm named Fay decided to hang around Florida for more than a week.  I am sure she hit the early-bird special and played shuffle-board, walking around in long sleeves, pretending it’s not hot.  Okay so some of that ripped off from Seinfeld…but still I thought it was amusing.

On a more serious topic, we need to discuss Gustav, as well as the rest of our lovely forecast.  We have serious heat building up in the west and a potentially kickin’ weekend on the east coast.

GUSTAV

As we head into the weekend, Gustav will be partying hard over the Gulf of Mexico, gaining strength, while potentially becoming a Category 3 hurricane (Winds: 111-130 mph).  This means that we could hear about storm surges over 10 feet.  The sights 5 days out from this writing are set close to New Orleans….eye on that in the coming days.

You can track it right here…

GAS ALERT

While Gustav approaches Haiti and gets ready to move over the gulf, you might notice that your local gas station is changing their prices….not for the better.  As Gustav moves over the central Gulf, it is bound to disrupt operations either mechanically or because workers have been evacuated from the oil rigs.  So if I were you, I’d fill up now.

It is also safe to say that if the storms forming behind Gustav (and there is another one on its heels)were to take a similar path, we will see prices remain higher than they are now, through the month of September.

LABOR DAY WEEKEND

Along the east coast, we could have a few thunderstorms left from a washed out cold front leftover late Friday into early Saturday, especially in the northeast.  Once we get to Saturday, you can set your cruise control as another batch of dry air and high pressure sits over you.

Across the midwest, the heat will turn up on you as temperatures take a run into the 90.  There is some high heat being turned up at this time over the mountains and that will migrate eastward and deliver a nice unofficial end to the summer.

The south will have to keep an eye on Gustav, with a possible landfall between the Florida panhandle to Houston.  I know that is a large swath of land to say it is going to hit, but today is Wednesday and Monday is 5 days away.  That is the best we can do at this time, but there are computer forecasts that say it could be east of New Orleans to Pensacola, FL.

The southwest and west should be free of rain this weekend….what else is new.

Feel free to comment on any of these and I’d be happy to discuss your topics in subsequent blogs.  Enjoy the weather!!
